UK Artists Do A Madonna JD Set!

Tennessee whiskey brand Jack Daniel's will be making music history and bringing a ray of light to Glasgow when artists such as Silver Columns, Malcolm Middleton, James Yuill, thecocknbullkid and Casiokids join forces for an incredible JD Set that promises to deliver an unforgettable reworking of Madonna’s finest musical moments.

The artists - all signed by London-based independent record label Moshi Moshi Records - will master their collaborations during a week of intensive studio sessions, to create new versions of tracks such as Vogue, Borderline, Like a Prayer, Into the Groove, Stay, Over and Over, Frozen, Dress you up, Open Your Heart, Holiday and La Isla Bonita.

Here are some of the comments by the label and the artists performing…

Moshi Moshi Records: Madonna was not a name we expected to see, but the more we thought about it, the more we realised how perfect she was for this. She has such a long career and diverse catalogue of songs there was something that spoke to everyone in there. Everyone had their favourite song or era and the more we talked about it, the more excited we became.

Cocknbullkid: I think it’s a really cool concept. It’s one of the first things I was asked to do for this year and I’m really excited to be a part of it. We settled on Madonna. I think there were suggestions for Prince, Bowie, Roxy Music. The guys get to unleash their feminine side with Madonna, and I get to wear a conical bra! I am really looking forward to reinterpreting some of Madonna’s most seminal pop songs with the rest of the Moshi Moshi crew. I hope we do it justice.

James Yuill: I’m covering Power of GoodBye, I don’t know why, but I love it… I even bought it on single when it came out. Very tempted to do Open Your Heart in an underworld style. Not sure if anyone else wants to do that though… I guess when we meet we’ll have a better idea about who should play what.

Malcolm Middleton: I’m not 100% sure yet, but I’ll probably latch onto the Silver Columns doing “Into The Groove”, and possibly do “Stay” myself. I’ve covered this before, but I think there’s a lot more that can be done with this song, and it’d be good to see what the other folk can add to it.
They are playing live tonight (June 17th) at the O2 ABC venue, in Glasgow - bringing Madonna’s music to an amazingly intimate venue.

You can watch videos of their rehearsals on the JD website, HERE.

Meeting Madonna "Unreal" For Robyn!

The Swedish pop star supported the Queen of Pop on the European leg of her Sticky And Sweet world tour.

“It was like an out of body experience because I’ve been a fan of hers since I was a kid, but also because of the big machine surrounding her – it was on a level that’s just unreal to me,” she told The Guardian.

“But it was very interesting and I learned a lot. (I learned) just what you have to do to maintain that level,” she added.

Robyn – real name Robyn Carlsson – is releasing three short albums this year, which includes a collaboration with rapper Snoop Dogg, following her writer’s block after her self-titled 2005 offering.

“When I came off tour, the idea of being in a studio for another year, making an album, touring it for three years, just felt depressing,” she continued.

“I decided to release the album in parts so that I could get something out quicker, tour quicker and get back in the studio quicker. It’s about me being my own boss.”

2. Madonna, the Material Girl who ruled the world
During an appearance on “American Bandstand” in 1983, Dick Clark asked an up-and-coming young singer what her career aspirations were. With a smile, she matter-of-factly said, “I want to rule the world.”
All hail Queen Madonna!
Twenty-five years, 12 Billboard No. 1 songs, worldwide album sales totaling hundreds of millions and a Golden Globe later, she has ruled with a velvet fist.
Besides her numerous accolades, Madonna has influenced fashion, dance and pop culture for an entire generation. Not bad for a girl from Bay City, Mich.

Bernard Manning On Madonna!

Madonna? she's a lovely girl. The cream of the milk, a beauty. A smart cookie. Oh, she is a wonderful singer, she beats them all. And a fantastic actress, everything seems to be so easy for her. She loves me."

How Madonna Really Is A Ray of Light In The World!

From an article in the Belfast Telegraph:

Unlike most of her ridiculously wealthy peers, the former Material Girl has spent the best part of the last decade actually doing something positive to alleviate poverty and suffering in the Third World.

For most celebrities, charity begins — and ends — once the paparazzi pack up.

But Madonna has been making poverty history in a real way by pouring her own money into charitable projects in the third world, most specifically in Malawi, the central African country that has been ravaged by famine, drought and disease in recent years and whose population has been reduced by almost a half by Aids.

For the past five years her Raising Malawi foundation has built a £750,000 care centre for orphans of the epidemic, and has provided vital medical supplies, teachers, exercise books, mosquito nets, clothing and shoes for the most needy. The second phase of her relief work included new housing developments, schools and hospitals across the stricken country.

Not only that, but she’s used her considerable influence to raise questions and to bring an end to certain human rights violations in the country, too. The most recent was the case of Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, the Malawi couple sentenced to 14 years hard labour for the ‘crime’ of homosexuality.

After publicising their plight on the internet, 50,000 of Madonna’s fans (including me) signed a petition that Madonna personally presented to the country’s president. As a result, he immediately ordered their release. One could say he knew on what side his bread was buttered.

Let’s hope that this becomes one Madonna-inspired fashion trend that can actually benefit mankind in some way.
