BEYONCE : I WANTED TO FOLLOW IN MADONNA’S FOOTSTEPS

Beyonce Knowles just pulled off one of the most spectacular surprise album drops of all time with the Dec. 13 release of her self-titled visual album, setting both iTunes and Billboard chart records in the process. What facilitated the successful campaign? The singer made it clear on Saturday night that it came to one major business decision.

“I started my own company,” Beyonce said referring to Parkwood Entertainment, the entertainment and management company she founded in 2008. “When I decided to manage myself, it was important that I didn’t go to some big management company. I felt like I wanted to follow the footsteps of Madonna and be a powerhouse and have my own empire and show other women when you get to this point in your career, you don’t have to go sign with someone else and share your money and your success — you do it yourself.”

Beyonce’s comments came during a private screening for fans and the press of the 17 videos accompanying the album at New York’s School of Visual Arts Theatre.

REVIEW : MADONNA AT “SNL”

She made a name for herself as the Material Girl, oozing sex appeal and an almost other worldly glamour.
But Madonna donned an unlikely persona to talk politics for a cameo appearance on Saturday Night Live.
The 55-year-old slipped into a pinstripe suit as she fixed a pair of intense spectacles onto her visage to chat with Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon on the late night sketch comedy show.

Wearing her blonde locks pinned into a new wave pompadour, the transformed star looked every bit the part of a seasoned intellectual.
Sitting for a roundtable discussion for the The Barry Gibb Talk show segment, the star assumed a confident and earnest demeanour.
It started cordially when Bee Gees legend Barry, played by Fallon, asked her: ‘You’ve travelled all over the world, you’re an observer of human nature – Republican or Democrat – why can’t people get along?’
She replied: ‘In my experience politicians… it doesn’t matter which country you come from, as long as they don’t put their personal ideology above doing the right thing, there will be unity. It’s simple.’
But after impressing him she infuriated him by interrupting him moments later.
The angry host said: ‘You already answered the question woman. You think you can come on my show and say anything you want to me?’

And after a bit of verbal tennis he ultimately conceded: ‘She’s tamed me like a wild horse.’
The show then closed with a singsong featuring the real Barry, who showed the pair how it should be done with his trademark falsetto.
But there was still time for Justin to entertain the crowd with a couple of tunes of his own.

Meanwhile, Madonna is said to study regularly with her own personal Kabbalah Centre rabbi.
And in keeping with her studies, the star no longer gives concerts on Friday night as it is the onset of Shabbat, and wears the red string around her left wrist for protection and to ward off the ‘Evil Eye’.
She became attracted to mystical offshoot of Judaism in the 1990s, and it has been claimed it was a way for her to deal with her worldwide fame.

NO FADE AWAY 1989 : LIKE A PRAYER by MADONNA

“I’m sort of naturally a pain in the ass. I naturally like to do things that rub people the wrong way. No, that’s wrong. Let me rephrase that. I just like being controversial, I guess. Even that doesn’t sound right. But somehow it happens that way. It’s more like “Hey, well, you know how they always say things are this way? Well, they’re not! Or they don’t have to be.”Madonna talking to Glenn O’Brien, Interview, 1990

“It’s hard to know what was more awe-inspiring about the conceit of this song and its accompanying video – the sheer ego needed to go there, or the fact that she now had the talent and soul and imagination to pull it off so magnificently.”Garry Mulholland, This Is Uncool: The 500 Greatest Singles Since Punk and Disco (Cassell, 2002)

And so we leave the eighties in much the same way as we started them. In a dazzle of glory. Now, almost 25 years later, it seems to me (feel free to scoff) that 1989 seems as charged and potent a year for pop as, say, 1965, 66, 79 or 81. A year saturated in sound.

Everyone and everything is playing their part in 1989. Italo House, Balearic beats, old-school indie, new school indie, London sound systems, Scottish widescreen miserabilists and the odd tune from proper pop goddesses.

Hip hop would not reach its commercial peak for a few years yet, but in Fight the Power it found its anthem, a charged, potent, sonically dense, angry record from a band who were both infuriating – in some of their politics- and thrilling – ditto – by turn.

Set against that you had De La Soul’s sunny “Afrocentric optimism”, while across the Atlantic Soul II Soul offered a soaring black British take on R&B (“a song and performance and production so perfect in every way,” Garry Mulholland said of Keep On Movin’, “that the Sun seemed to come out every time it played”; personally I prefer Back to Life – though both are great).

The Beloved offered blissed-out (possibly, oh let’s be honest, probably, drug-induced) dreamy electropop, and in Manchester guitar bands were shrugging off the spell of the Smiths (though Morrissey’s shy, sensitive bookishness was still offering a useful model for The Sundays) and finding that they could dance after all.

The Stone Roses – as this year’s comeback proved – still get all the kudos, although they never seemed that much more than an attitude and a decent guitarist to me. By contrast the Mondays offered hooligan flair and prole-art energy in their swampy funk (though, arguably, it’s 808 State’s Pacific State that was the city’s best gift to the world that year).

In America rock was finding fresh fuel in Black Francis’s scream and the bass-playing of Kim Deal. The Pixies initiated the loud-quiet-loud pattern that would infuse every half decent rock band for at least the next decade (and all too many that weren’t even a quarter decent).

But 1989, I’ve decided, belongs to the women. Dusty – the first great British pop vocalist – bows out with an undervalued Pet Shop Boys ballad. Kate Bush put James Joyce’s erotic vision to music. But in the end they are both in the shadow of the material girl.

In a way it’s almost too easy to choose Like a Prayer as the Madonna track. Written with Patrick Leonard, it is her most nakedly obvious attempt at pop classicism (gospel choirs and all). I’d be happy to argue that Papa Don’t Preach was the most successful – and moving – lyric she ever wrote, and some of her most interesting music would emerge in the nineties after she’d stopped selling 20 million albums every go (not that 2 million copies is to be sniffed at either).

But then pop’s pleasures often work best when they’re obvious, when they’re immediate, when they’re in your face. And Like a Prayer is in your face.

Part of that is down to the tune itself, but you could also point to Mary Lambert’s thrillingly offensive video. Against a backdrop of burning crosses, it not only argues that Jesus was black but that Madonna might be having sex with him. Always running in parallel, Madonna’s fervent attraction to and feminist rejection of the orthodoxies of the Catholic Church was one of her most significant creative accelerants. Plus she enjoyed noising people up. And, ever the smart businesswoman, she knew there was money in it.

The sex button was an easy one to push in a country that was both politically and culturally conservative in that decade. It was to Madonna’s credit that her sexuality never felt – to me at any rate – like something she was commodifying. Some of her critics felt that was exactly what she was doing, but as she sang on Human Nature “Express yourself, don’t repress yourself”. We can argue about whether that is the sensible, grown-up response.

Camille Paglia once argued that Madonna was the future of feminism for that very reason: “Madonna has a far profounder vision of sex than do the feminists. She sees both the animality and the artifice. Changing her costume style and hair colour virtually every month, Madonna embodies the eternal values of beauty and pleasure. Feminism says, ‘No more masks.’ Madonna says we are nothing but masks”.

That might be honest but it also opened the way for the music business to objectify almost every woman in the industry over the years that followed. For that reason Madonna’s image-making is not unproblematic.

But she also is a woman in charge of her life, of her career, of her image. She has never been a victim. That’s why her example matters.

That and the fact that Like A Prayer shows just what is possible in a simple pop song. Sex, religion, controversy. And a choir. I love that choir.

MADONNA ANNOUNCES DAVID BLAINE AS DECEMBER GUEST CURATOR FOR #ARTFORFREEDOM

Madonna has confirmed David Blaine as the December guest curator for Art for Freedom. Guest curators collaborate with Madonna to select daily submissions to be showcased on artforfreedom.com.

“Madonna, who has always been an incredible inspiration, invited me to be a part of Art for Freedom. It’s an amazing platform to bring artists together and I look forward to seeing the brilliance this generates.”

“I am excited David is signing on as guest curator. This is only the beginning of Art for Freedom bringing artists together to change the world.” commented Madonna.

As part of the Art For Freedom initiative, David Blaine will work with Madonna to select one artist from their respective month whose creative expression demonstrates a unique view of the fight for human rights. Madonna will then award a $10,000 grant to a nonprofit organization of the winning artist’s choice. All projects must be focused on the values of Art For Freedom.

The latest freedom fighters chosen to receive an Art for Freedom grant are Amber Fares and the Speed Sisters – a documentary about the Middle East’s first all women motor racing team. Against a backdrop of social and political upheaval, Speed Sisters presents an inspiring look into the drive to be true to oneself. The grant will go towards finishing the film. You can see more on the project below.

Launched in September 2013, Art For Freedom is a global digital initiative, led by Madonna in partnership with VICE Media, designed to fuel free speech – to respond, address and protest persecution and discrimination around the world. It is an online public art project encouraging people to express their personal meaning of freedom and revolution, in the form of video, music, poetry, and photography. Public submissions become part of the Art For Freedom website: contributors can join the project by uploading original artwork or tagging original posts #artforfreedom. The project was launched with the film secretprojectrevolution, co-directed by Madonna and Steven Klein.

VICE Media continues to serve as co-curator of Art for Freedom, leveraging VICE’s extensive global network of filmmakers, artists, writers, musicians, museums, and more, to contribute works to the project.

MADONNA’S SONG INSPIRES HARSH GUPTA’S COLLECTION

Designer Harsh Gupta has come up with Christmas collection and says he has taken inspiration from pop star Madonna’s popular song – “Secret” – for the designs.

“For my autumn-winter 2014 collection, I took inspiration from the song ‘Secret’ by Madonna,” Gupta told IANS, and added that an inspiration is everything for an artist or a designer.

“It gives you required direction, be it mood, style, silhouette or interpretation. Inspiration is the guiding force behind every artist or designer`s work,” he said.

The collection offers glamorous, high-end, cocktail evening dresses for modern confident women.

“I love the song and found it very captivating to portray the woman I wanted to show through the collection. I kept visualising a modern, feminine, confident, sultry and very attractive woman while conceptualising the styles for my 2014 couture collection,” said Gupta.

For the apparels, Gupta indulged in fine fabrics like gazar silk, satin silk, silk-taffeta, single jersey lycra, silk-chiffon, georgette and brocade in range of colours such as mid-night blue, burgundy, bone-gray, brass-green, emily pink, daffodil yellow, black, copper and cadmium red.

The entire collection was put together in three months and Gupta says working on the collection was a memorable experience.

“We actually researched on some very innovative couture making techniques from Paris and followed some strict methods of couture cutting and sewing techniques while crafting the whole collection. It was truly a very memorable experience for me and my team,” he said.

MADONNA AND SEAN PENN FOR J/P HAITIAN RELIEF ORGANIZATION

The mission at J/P Haitian Relief Organization (J/P HRO) is simple: To save lives and bring sustainable programs to the Haitian people quickly and effectively. Following the tragic earthquake of 2010, J/P HRO began working immediately to make meaningful and lasting impact in Haiti. Today, J/P HRO programs focus on supporting the residents of the camps we manage and the surrounding areas transition from life left homeless by the earthquake to durable, sustainable and prosperous communities. Early on, J/P HRO became camp manager of PĂ©tionville Camp, serving up to 60,000 internally displaced persons. Our staff, which is nearly 350-strong and 95 percent Haitian, is working every day to provide education, health and community development, and economic opportunities. Taking a geographically focused and integrated approach to community regeneration, J/P HRO programs empower the residents of Delmas 32 to revitalize their neighborhood. Together, we aim to demonstrate that something fundamentally different can come from a slum in the center of one of the world’s poorest cities: sustainable and prosperous communities. We work with the support and in collaboration with local and national government leaders, community based organizations, other international NGO’s, UN agencies, donors and-most importantly-the community members themselves.

Sean Penn is the Founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of J/P Haitian Relief Organization. Two-time Academy Award® winner Sean Penn has become an American film icon in a career spanning nearly three decades. Penn’s humanitarian work has found him in New Orleans in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and more recently in earthquake-ravaged Haiti. In January 2010, Penn founded the J/P Haitian Relief Organization, which focuses on medical aid, protection, and re-location. His organization is currently serving as UN IOM designated Camp Management for one of the largest IDP camps in Port-au-Prince and established the first emergency re-location in the country. For his efforts in Haiti, Penn was named Ambassador at Large to the nation of Haiti on January 14th, 2012, he received the Commander’s Award for Service (US Army 82nd Airborne Division), 82nd Airborne Award for Meritorious Service, the Operation Unified Response JTF Haiti Certificate from Lieutenant General, US Army Commander P.K. Keen, along with the 1st Recon 73rd Division Coin of Excellence, 2nd Brigade Combat Team Coin of Excellence, Commendation of Excellence United States Southern Command, and Award of Excellence by the Deputy Commander US Southern Command. Earlier this year, Penn was honored with the “Children’s and Families Global Development Fund Humanitarian Award” presented by the Ambassador of the Republic of Haiti, Raymond A. Joseph and his wife, Lola Poisson-Joseph. Additionally, in July 2010 Penn was knighted by Haitian President Rene Preval in a ceremony in Port-Au-Prince.

MADONNA VISITS THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN WITH LOURDES

Looks like Lourdes Leon is college bound!
Madonna caused quite a stir on campus when she visited the University of Michigan with her daughter on Wednesday.

“There was a lot of excitement,” Lindsey Meekhof, a vocal performance senior there, tells PEOPLE.

“[Madonna's] daughter was learning about our musical theater program,” Meekhof added. “Someone announced to my choir class Madonna was in the building, and choir wasn’t productive anymore after that.”

Dressed in black and wearing oversized sunglasses, the pop icon was apparently trying to go incognito as she exited the dean’s office at the music school with her daughter, 17.

Word spread quickly among students as Madonna and Lourdes – who reportedly played the role of Rizzo in her high school production of Grease – toured North Campus with a musical theater major and ate lunch at one of the residence halls.

Stephen Bray Talks Madonna and unreleased Tracks.

Being a massive Madonna fan myself, I feel like I’d be remiss if I didn’t ask you at least one question about your fellow ASCAP member and Queen of Pop.

(Laughs) I said The Color Purple was maybe my favorite experience, but I could just as easily say that those early days – those ten years of working with Madonna – were some of the happiest musical times of my life because I was fortunate enough to have a partner where we finished each other’s musical sentences, and I don’t think I’ve ever gotten along quite as well with any other collaborator in terms of writing.

So are there a lot of unreleased recordings from your days working and writing with her that the public has yet to hear?

There are a couple of note that I can think of: There’s a theme song that we were writing to Desperately Seeking Susan, and I have not heard that particular piece of music other than in the pile of cassettes that I have somewhere. Then I think we have a really cool song “First There’s a Kiss” that never saw the light of day.

And do you think that they’ll ever see the light of day, or maybe get an official release?

I hope so!

MADONNA ON THE “TOP 25 ART COLLECTORS”

Global pop superstars makes tons of cash, and since there are only so many mansions and cars you can buy, it’s no wonder that some of them sink their fortunes into art. The Hollywood Reporter has created a list of the entertainment industry’s “Top 25 Art Collectors,” and Madonna is on the list.

She got her art start in 1987, when she paid a million bucks for a painting by renowned artist Fernand Leger. Since then, she’s amassed more than 300 works, from big names such as Salvador Dali, Maxfield Parrish, Frida Kahlo, Damien Hirst and Man Ray. In 2000, she paid $4.7 million for a Pablo Picasso work, and her collection was appraised at more than $100 million in 2008. This year, she auctioned off one of her Legers for more than $7 million and donated the profits to support girls’ education in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Happy Madonna-Ween 2013!

Madonna Halloween!

LIZ SMITH: ON MADONNA BEING DARING …

MADONNA is the cover girl on Harper’s Bazaar’s “The Daring Issue.” Well, of course she is. I used to hope that at a certain point Madonna would go all Dietrich on us. Stand in a misty spotlight in a glamorous, glittery gown, and sing some of her truly lovely ballads. (In the end, I think it will be her ballads, rather than her dance music, that will define her for future generations.)

But this is not going to happen! And I suppose, certainly for Madonna, that’s a good thing. Calming down would be like a little death for her. She has to be active, brassy and bold — creative. (Even if we’re not quite sure what she’s creating!) And while she can be hurt by words, she doesn’t dwell on those who don’t approve.

She tells the magazine this, and I think it truly is Madonna’s mantra for existing: “If I can’t be daring in my work or the way I live my life, then I don’t really see the point of being on this planet.”

MADONNA’S MOST DARING MOMENTS by HARPER’S BAZAAR

MADONNA’S MOST DARING MOMENTS by HARPER’S BAZAAR
1 The Midwest Girl
At 25, Madonna was on her way to becoming a star in New York—where she found it a little be easier to be daring than in her hometown of Rochester, Michigan. For the November cover story, the singer wrote in BAZAAR, “if you are a pop star, eccentric behavior is expected from you…I was also wearing as many crucifixes around my neck as I could carry, and telling people in interviews that I did it because I thought Jesus was sexy. Well, he was sexy to me, but I also said it to be provocative.”

2 The Virgin Tour
By the following year Madonna embarked on her debut tour—The Virgin Tour. People believed her song, “Like a Virgin” was an attempt to promote pre-marital sex. Her virginal all-white stage costume became one of her trademark looks.

3 Blond Ambition
In 1990, Madonna embarked on the highly controversial Blond Ambition Tour. The songstress continued to be a sexual provocateur, and shocked audiences by mixing Catholicism and sexuality in her songs and performances. Jean Paul Gaultier designed her costumes of cone bras and corsets, which became iconic.

4 In Bed
Madonna attended the Cannes Film Festival for the first time in 1991 to screen her film, In Bed With Madonna. The pop singer dressed the part in a pink silk robe, which she dropped at the end of the screening to reveal another Jean Paul Gaultier-designed cone bra and matching briefs.

5 Les Enfants Terribles
In 1993, Madonna daringly walked in Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring runway show in an ultra-revealing dress.

6 Ray of Light
Following the birth of her first child, Lourdes, Madonna traded her crucifixes for a red string bracelet, when she began studying the religion of Kabbalah. She wrote in Bazaar, “I was accused of joining a cult. I was accused of being brainwashed. Of giving away all my money. I was accused of all sorts of crazy things…I was actually trying to become a better person.” Her new-found spirituality influenced her seventh album, Ray of Light—as well her Eastern-inspired wardrobe.

7 The Kiss
At the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna shared the stage and a kiss heard-around-the-world with both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera to perform her hit at the time, “Hollywood”.

8 The Confessions Tour
Even in her 40s—Madonna continued to stir the pot with her use of religious imagery. In 2006 when she took her Confessions Tour to Rome, the Vatican released a statement denouncing her and her “blasphemous” portrayal of Jesus on the cross.

9 The Film Creator
Madonna adds writer to her resume in 2010, for the film W.E. which she directed and co-wrote. She hit the international film festival circuit in an array of bold gowns from Marchesa, Jean Paul Gaultier and Dolce & Gabbana. In her BAZAAR cover story she wrote that making films is “the most challenging and rewarding thing” she has done. One can only presume, “so far…”

10 The Madonna Revolution
In September 2013, Madonna released her “secretprojectrevolution” at the Gagosian—a 17-minute film she starred in, directed by friend and fashion photographer Steven Klein. The film features Madonna getting thrown in jail for being lewd—she then calls for a revolution and for people to fight for their freedom of expression.

MIA reveals she offered new track 'Sexodus' to Madonna first

Now the NFL is suing her for $1.5m over her middle-finger at the Super Bowl, but she doesn't care about that, either. "It's a massive waste of time, a massive waste of money," she says in a video posted last month on YouTube. "It's ridiculous… a massive display of powerful corporation dick shaking." It's also an example of the hypocrisy of the music business, she says, pointing out that while she is scapegoated for her "display of female empowerment through punk rock", the NFL was happy to have cheerleaders "under 16… hips thrusting in the air, legs wide open… in a very sexually provocative position".

Misogyny and the exploitation of women are a recurrent theme in her music. What does she think about Miley Cyrus and her twerking? "It's a spectacle," is all she'll say. "I'm not talking about anyone else." She has more respect for Madonna's brand of self-exploitation, and tells me a funny story about a song she offered her from the new album, Sexodus. "I actually played that song to Madonna when I wrote it and said, 'Oh, you can have this.' She gave it back to me."

Madonna didn't think it was right for her, but MIA still wanted to know what she thought of the question behind it: when you have it all, what should you do with it? "So I was like, what d'you do? And she said, 'You spend it!' And I said, no, I don't think that's the right answer." Did it change her opinion of Madonna? "No, because Madonna is true to Madonna. She always said she was a material girl."

Madonna’s Free Movie Tops 1.2 Mil Downloads via BitTorrent

BitTorrent has largely been synonymous with piracy in Hollywood, but now the peer-to-peer app company is touting the power of its platform to let content creators distribute intellectual property on their own terms to millions of Internet users.
Vice Media teamed with Madonna to release the Art For Freedom bundle via BitTorrent on Sept. 24. In less than three weeks, the Art for Freedom bundle has been downloaded more than 1.2 million downloads, according to the companies.
The bundle includes the 17-minute film secretprojectrevolution, which Madonna co-directed with Steven Klein, along with special bonus features, including an interview with Vice chief creative officer Eddy Moretti.

Vice, encouraged by the Madonna project, now plans to release an upcoming series of BitTorrent Bundles starting in mid-November featuring original video content that will explore the relationship between open expression and open technology.
BitTorrent has been incredibly transformative for millennial audiences around the world, so this is a really exciting collaboration for us, Vice Media VP of sales Ben Dietz said. BitTorrents distribution platform gives millions instant access to the story

Transformative is one way to put it. Studios, TV networks music labels and other traditional media companies have viewed BitTorrent as a scourge enabling rampant piracy of their content. BitTorrent has countered that its no more a facilitator of piracy than a web browser, and that its application provides access to thousands of legal movies, songs, books and software applications.

The Vice x BitTorrent Bundle series will provide original videos, music, archival content and behind-the-scenes footage directly from artists.
