Madonna On BuzzFeed

this one is my favorite. we waste far too much time trying to conform to what society expects us to look like. In fact the body is temporary and its kind of amazing how much time we waste on something that is impermanent.

don’t quit your day job. however its a very good point. people don’t know how to listen its a lost artform. mostly because everyone is on their phone.

no one should die of hunger its a ridiculous concept in this day and age. unfortunately people still are. please explain to me how I can get my kids to live on 7 bucks a month.

unfortunately, religion is responsible for too much separation, violence, pain and suffering. If people really study the Holy Books of whatever path they’re on, they will see that there’s a thread that unites all of them and that is Love Your Neighbor As Yourself. World Peace is possible. It has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with consciousness.

yes i agree. If we don’t learn from history we are going to repeat it. this is obviously a poem written by someone who believes in reincarnation. The transmigration of the soul. Meet you in the studio we can write a song together.

in some societies it is a crime to be a woman…women are still treated like second class citizens in many parts of the world. Hopefully that will end one day soon. I love this art, its really good.

you’re lucky to live in a place where you have the freedom to express yourself. Don’t take it for granted.

i agree with the words but to be a real freedom fighter its about action, not just words. ultimately thats what makes a freedom fighter. Someone who doesn’t just talk the talk but walks the walk. Its not what you say but what you do.

excellent art direction. A for effort. I often feel the same way that I can only express myself thru dance. You go girl.

i dont understand – a fundamentalist is an extremist who doesn’t see anyone else’s point of view. is that what you are saying? does reading create an open mind? im confused, i need an explanation.

i love the idea of family, but i’m worried about everyone’s health.
Madonna thinks “Why Juggalos Inspire Me” is OMG

I support a woman’s freedom to choose whether she covers her head or not. However covering ones hair for prayer is open to interpretation and different belief systems. Veil or no veil, my vote is for freedom of expression no matter what.

MADONNA FOR BUZZFEED : “11 FREEDOM FIGHTERS WHO HAVE INSPIRED ME”

By Madonna

John Lennon: He went from being one of the worldʼs greatest pop stars to speaking out against the Vietnam War and using every opportunity he could in interviews to spread his message of peace. And he wrote one of the greatest songs ever about peace, “Imagine,” one of my favorite songs.

Malala Yousafzai: Malala risked her life to defend the right for women to be educated in the Swat Valley (where she is from) as well as Islamic countries. She continues to speak out for educating girls everywhere.

James Baldwin: One of my greatest inspirations as an artist. A great writer, poet, and activist who insisted that all artists have the responsibility to shape and change the world.

Marlon Brando: An actor who I really admire — the finest of his generation. He was willing to fight for the rights of American Indians and he didnʼt care if it made him unpopular in the entertainment community (which it did). He was a badass in every way, what can I say?

Martin Luther King Jr.: He was fearless in his fight. His peaceful approach to ending segregation in the United States is beyond admirable. What he did for the civil rights movement is historical. He sacrificed his life for what he believed in. He changed the face of America.

Nelson Mandela: He was willing to serve time in prison for 27 years, fighting to abolish apartheid in South Africa. He came out with no bitterness, forgiving his enemies. To me, he’s a saint.

Pussy Riot: Fearless young women who are the perfect illustration that you can use your art to change the world. After spending two years in jail, they continue to stand up and fight for human rights.

Keith Haring: Keith was a great friend who was very supportive of me in the early days of my career. He used street art to bring awareness to the gay community — fighting for equal rights for all, but specifically for people who were HIV positive.

Frida Khalo: An artist I have always admired. She played an important role in the revolution of Mexico. She fought for the right of artists as well as the working class. She came up in a time where there were very few female artists — the odds were stacked against her, and yet her voice was heard. And now she is considered one of the greatest artists of the 21st century.

Ai Weiwei: Ai Weiwei is a gifted Chinese artist who is willing to speak out against the censorship of artists and the oppression by the Chinese government, which doesnʼt allow freedom of artistic expression. He was abducted and held in captivity for 81 days for continuing to create art even though the government forbade him to. He cleverly used social media to speak out about his predicament and bring awareness other fellow Chinese artists.

Nancy Cunard: She was the heiress to the Cunard fortune — but because she fought for the rights of African-Americans in the ’20s and ’30s, she was disowned by her family. She raised money to buy a printing press so she could print newspapers and books to keep African-American culture alive through poetry, music, literature, and art. She ended up destitute because she fought for what she believed in. She went from socialite and fashion icon to freedom fighter, an interesting journey that most people do not know about; she was extremely courageous.

50cent Praises Madonna.

Madonna on BuzzFeed...

Attention BuzzFeed:

After traveling around the world and witnessing an overwhelming amount of discrimination, intolerance, and bigotry — I felt I needed to make a statement. I started ArtForFreedom.com in September 2013 to give artists everywhere a platform to define what freedom means to them and to allow them to express their right for freedom of expression.

Now I am asking you — the BuzzFeed community — to share with me and others your artistic expression of freedom. This can be in the form of photography, video, dance, poetry, etc. I will be going through those entries directly on April 14 at 6 p.m. and giving you my input and encouragement to let your voice be heard LOUDLY.

An artist has the responsibility to not only reflect society, but to shape it.

If you need any inspiration, I made you a BuzzFeed-worthy list of some of the many freedom fighters who have guided me along the way with their actions as well as their art. Are you with me? Then submit below and I will see you on April 14.
