When an icon like Madonna teams up with a store like Macy's, the result can only be fabulous. High fashion was the order of the day as today was the official launch of the Material Girl collection. Only a few stores around the nation were chosen to participate in the grand affair and the Macy's store at Dadeland Mall in Miami was one of them.
Our coverage of the event began at 10 am. We were greeted in the juniors department by dance mixes of Madonna's tunes. Those who were early enough received a gold bandeau from the collection and a ten dollar gift card to be used to shop the new merchandise. Several news outlets and photographers were there, along with a radio station.
There were fun trivia questions and prizes. Those who answered a trivia question correctly won a personally autographed shirt from Madonna. These were not pre-signed but rather would be inscribed to anyone of your choosing and would be sent to your house by Madonna. How awesome is that? While attending fashion events likes this, it is important to maintain proper decorum. It is impolite to jump up and down and scream "wooooooooooooooo!" in the middle of Macy's, except after winning a shirt autographed by Madonna. Scream and jump, I did after answering one of the questions correctly!
The Macy's event was one big fashion party, including music, dancing, fashion shows, complimentary makeovers and for those who purchased at least $50.00 worth of merchandise from the Material Girl line, you could have your own professional photo shoot. One lucky young lady walked away with a $500.00 Macy's gift card.
I was very impressed about the items in this collection. Many of us in the fashion industry had our doubts at first. We have seen many celebrity fashion lines come and go. In truth, we hold these celebrity lines to a higher standard. To the naysayer who has said, "well, I wouldn't wear anything designed by Madonna", we at Miami Style say yes you would if you have any sense of fashion and style. This line is fun, its flirty, its new and exciting and frankly, a breath of fresh air to the fashion world. While in some of these pieces, you can clearly see Madonna's 80's influence, these designs also have a modern spin.
We saw the generous use of lace, giving the line a feminine and romantic feel. We also noted the use of the color black, which is going to be the IT color this fall as the "Goth" fashion inspired by the movie Twilight will be this year's fall style. We have also noted these influences on the runways of Paris earlier this year, where we saw the use of fur, leather, lace and the color black. Many of the pieces of the Material Girl collection also have these key elements and will lend themselves well to the upcoming fashion trend. The Material Girl collection is not about a single piece, but rather combining several pieces in your own unique way. Once the fall trend fades, what you will have are pieces that you can use to achieve other looks. In keeping with Miami Style, this line also features bold and colorful floral prints. The new Material Girl line includes a collection of shoes, hair accessories, purses, bags and jewelry.
It was previously reported that the retail price range was $12-40.00. The actual range is between $5.00- to $78.00. The most expensive item of the collection that we saw was a waist length studded biker jacket done in a quality faux leather fabric. In fact the clothing in this collection were designed with soft, body conscious fabrics. The garments are well tailored and body conscious and must be pointed out that this is not a plus size line by any means. The sizing ranges from extra small to large. For example, I am 5' 5" and weigh 108 pounds and I fit a size large in this collection. Keep in mind that technically I could fit a medium but as a matter of my own comfort level, prefer my clothing a bit roomier and not tight or binding like a used to wear our clothing back in the 1980's. Macys.com is currently offering shoppers free shipping on all orders $50.00 or more, however, only select items from the collection are available through their website at this time.
We at Miami Style loved this collection and cannot wait to see what else Madonna and Lourdes have in store for us with this label.
