Martin Schreiber: New Madonna vs. Pre-Madonna
In 1979, photographer Martin Schreiber was teaching nude photography at Parsons school in New York when 20-year-old Madonna Ciccone showed up and modelled for him for $30.The Man who shot the Pre-Madonna confesses to online social media network, The August Man.
August Man: You shot Madonna nude before she was famous, then Steven Meisel also shot her nude for her book “Sex” in 1992, which was a completely different style from your shots. If you had a chance to do a nude portrait of her again now how would you go about doing it?
Martin Schreiber: I would love to hold an exhibit where I would shoot her in the exact same poses and contrast the portraits side by side. Maybe I would give her a harder edge, since she’s definitely evolved from the woman she used to be. Also I’ll be interesting to shoot the new portraits in colour to contrast with the black and white. As a model, she was very quiet, pliable and she took direction. Some models have ideas and move around and get into it, but she didn’t really get involved. She was a little wooden. I made several phone calls to her agent in Hollywood and even sent a registered letter, but they were never answered. These photos are sweet, innocent and (in them) she’s lovely and pretty. They’re not exploitative or vulgar. I would love to shoot her again… take a couple of the poses and the same lighting from then and photograph her today and put them side by side. I was hoping she’d take the bait but she has yet to get in touch.
