On This Day is a new regular series dedicated to great moments in music history.
26 years ago this week, Madonna scored her first UK No.1 single with 'Into The Groove'. It was the first in a run of an astounding 13 chart-toppers for the singer. These have included templates of hardy, pop perfection ('Like A Prayer', 'Papa Don't Preach'), forward thinking, experiments in the genre ('Vogue', 'Frozen') and massively misjudged Don Mclean covers featuring Rupert Everett on backing vocals ('American Pie').
But has she ever topped 'Into The Groove'?
According to legend, the track was written for Cheyne (the protegee of 'Everybody' producer Mark Kamins) by Madonna and 80s songwriting mainstay Stephen Bray. It may have been inspired by a rather inconsequential fling, but the theme of 'the freedom of the dancefloor' was something she'd return to throughout her career.
"The dance floor was quite a magical place for me," she said about the track "I started off wanting to be a dancer, so that had a lot to do with the song. The freedom that I always feel when I'm dancing, that feeling of inhabiting your body, letting yourself go, expressing yourself through music. I always thought of it as a magical place – even if you're not taking ecstasy. Hence that came to me as the primary inspiration for 'Into the Groove'"
Having wisely decided that the track was too good to give away, she kept it for herself. Released as the first wave of Madonna-mania hit (when "Wanna Be"'s didn't refer to a Spice Girls song), it topped the charts and remains her biggest selling single in the UK (850,000 copies sold, fact fans).
With its rudimentary opening chords, elemental lyrics and pure vocal delivery, it marked the beginning of the end of early period Madonna: the nascent New York runaway. In a couple of singles time she'd return sleek, shorn of hair with a more sophisticated sound to match with 'Papa Don't Preach'. However, 'Into The Groove' remains, along with 'Borderline' and 'Crazy For You', an early Madonna classic.

Madonna - A Woman Who Paved The Way For Equality
In this day and age, in North America, to imagine being denied anything simply because of gender is laughable.
Thankfully the daughters of our generation will most probably not experience such prejudice.
Although the fight for women’s rights is still a raging war to many, on August 26th we will remember those who fought to deliver a constitutional amendment and won the right to vote.
In honor of "National Women’s Equality Day" on August 26th, 2011 we celebrate the lionesses of our past and present.
Enough said, right?
Every young woman knows how Madonna split the seams of pop-culture with her provocative lyrics and music videos:
- Her music career earned her a spot in history as "Billboard’s" #2 on their list of "Hot 100 All-Time Top Artist".
- "Time" named her one of the "25 Most Powerful Women In The Past Century".
While critics oftentimes have reviewed her musical and acting talents poorly, it’s Madonna’s refusal to accept the ordinary that makes her a pioneer to women following in her footsteps.

Madonna In Venice - Like A Director?

Next month, a whole lot of visitors will descend on Venice.
Movie people, models, wannabes, has-beens, never-weres, probably a few athletes.
If Venice is truly unlucky, reality TV creatures will go all gondola.
And of course, the media will be there, in droves.
These mostly agreeable people gather for the annual "Venice Film Festival", which runs from Sept. 8th to the 18th ( August 31st to September 10th ).
But, the movie whose reception I am most anxious to hear about is "W.E", directed by Madonna.
This film weaves two corresponding tales — one about the kingdom-shaking romance of Duke and Duchess of Windsor; the other about a young modern woman, fascinated with the tale of Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII.
Nothing Madonna has ever done professionally — no album, no concert, no acting job — has consumed "La Ciccone" as has "W.E.":
She’s poured everything she’s got into the movie.
To say it has been an exquisite labor of love would be vastly understating her effort, commitment and talents.
Aside from possibly a few of her four children and perhaps a gentleman to hold her hand, Madonna will surely be accompanied in Venice by Harvey Weinstein, whose company will release the movie, later this year.
After "W.E." shows in Venice, it moves on to Toronto.
Some people might assume Madonna will be a little wistful in Venice, recalling the voluptuous girl, writhing along the fabled canals, in 1984’s classic video, "Like a Virgin".
But they’d be assuming incorrectly.
Madonna never looks back. She is totally in the now and in the future.
She probably doesn’t even remember the 1980’s anymore — that was another life; she was another person.
And so were the rest of us.
Remember the shock waves caused by a pop song with the word "virgin" in the title?
