On July 4th, Madonna’s manager Guy Oseary got the "Material Girl"’s fans voguing by announcing on "Twitter":
"It’s official.. Madonna’s 1st day in the recording studio for the new album."
That, coupled with "Rolling Stone"’s recent scandalous de-throning of The Queen Of Pop (relax — all was made right by "RS" readers, who reinstated her to her royal position), caused us to ponder some of Madge’s memorable lead singles off past LPs.
We listed seven of them in a poll two weeks ago. Below are the results of what you chose as your favorite among those singles.
First, we’ll note that Madonna has released 11 studio albums so far, that span from her 1983 self-titled debut to her 2008 offer "Hard Candy".
From these albums, we selected the lead singles off of seven of them for our poll:
"Like A Virgin" (from "Like A Virgin", 1984), "Live To Tell" ("True Blue", 1986), "Like A Prayer" ("Like A Prayer", 1989), "Erotica" ("Erotica", 1992), "Secret" ("Bedtime Stories", 1994), "Frozen" ("Ray Of Light", 1998) and "Hung Up" ("Confessions On A Dance Floor", 2005).
All in all, 10,321 votes were cast, and "Hung Up" was chosen by our readers as the fave among Madge’s lead singles.
Here are the results:
"Hung Up" (29%, 2,947 Votes)
"Like A Prayer" (28%, 2,876 Votes)
"Like A Virgin" (20%, 2,024 Votes)
"Frozen" (12%, 1,202 Votes)
"Erotica" (5%, 468 Votes)
"Live To Tell" (4%, 442 Votes)
"Secret" (2%, 353 Votes)
"Hung Up", which Madonna co-produced with Stuart Price, and which samples ABBA’s 1979 classic "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)", pretty much went toe-to-toe with "Like A Prayer", which Madge co-wrote and co-produced with her onetime frequent collaborator Patrick Leonard, over the two weeks the voting went on.
In the end, the whole thing was just for fun, and now we’ll be looking ahead to new music from lady Madonna.
Until then, we’ll just quote from this poll’s winning song, and note that, indeed, time goes by so slowly.
