LIZ SMITH: ON MADONNA BEING DARING …
MADONNA is the cover girl on Harper’s Bazaar’s “The Daring Issue.” Well, of course she is. I used to hope that at a certain point Madonna would go all Dietrich on us. Stand in a misty spotlight in a glamorous, glittery gown, and sing some of her truly lovely ballads. (In the end, I think it will be her ballads, rather than her dance music, that will define her for future generations.)
But this is not going to happen! And I suppose, certainly for Madonna, that’s a good thing. Calming down would be like a little death for her. She has to be active, brassy and bold — creative. (Even if we’re not quite sure what she’s creating!) And while she can be hurt by words, she doesn’t dwell on those who don’t approve.
She tells the magazine this, and I think it truly is Madonna’s mantra for existing: “If I can’t be daring in my work or the way I live my life, then I don’t really see the point of being on this planet.”

MADONNA’S MOST DARING MOMENTS by HARPER’S BAZAAR
MADONNA’S MOST DARING MOMENTS by HARPER’S BAZAAR
1 The Midwest Girl
At 25, Madonna was on her way to becoming a star in New York—where she found it a little be easier to be daring than in her hometown of Rochester, Michigan. For the November cover story, the singer wrote in BAZAAR, “if you are a pop star, eccentric behavior is expected from you…I was also wearing as many crucifixes around my neck as I could carry, and telling people in interviews that I did it because I thought Jesus was sexy. Well, he was sexy to me, but I also said it to be provocative.”
2 The Virgin Tour
By the following year Madonna embarked on her debut tour—The Virgin Tour. People believed her song, “Like a Virgin” was an attempt to promote pre-marital sex. Her virginal all-white stage costume became one of her trademark looks.
3 Blond Ambition
In 1990, Madonna embarked on the highly controversial Blond Ambition Tour. The songstress continued to be a sexual provocateur, and shocked audiences by mixing Catholicism and sexuality in her songs and performances. Jean Paul Gaultier designed her costumes of cone bras and corsets, which became iconic.
4 In Bed
Madonna attended the Cannes Film Festival for the first time in 1991 to screen her film, In Bed With Madonna. The pop singer dressed the part in a pink silk robe, which she dropped at the end of the screening to reveal another Jean Paul Gaultier-designed cone bra and matching briefs.
5 Les Enfants Terribles
In 1993, Madonna daringly walked in Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring runway show in an ultra-revealing dress.
6 Ray of Light
Following the birth of her first child, Lourdes, Madonna traded her crucifixes for a red string bracelet, when she began studying the religion of Kabbalah. She wrote in Bazaar, “I was accused of joining a cult. I was accused of being brainwashed. Of giving away all my money. I was accused of all sorts of crazy things…I was actually trying to become a better person.” Her new-found spirituality influenced her seventh album, Ray of Light—as well her Eastern-inspired wardrobe.
7 The Kiss
At the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna shared the stage and a kiss heard-around-the-world with both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera to perform her hit at the time, “Hollywood”.
8 The Confessions Tour
Even in her 40s—Madonna continued to stir the pot with her use of religious imagery. In 2006 when she took her Confessions Tour to Rome, the Vatican released a statement denouncing her and her “blasphemous” portrayal of Jesus on the cross.
9 The Film Creator
Madonna adds writer to her resume in 2010, for the film W.E. which she directed and co-wrote. She hit the international film festival circuit in an array of bold gowns from Marchesa, Jean Paul Gaultier and Dolce & Gabbana. In her BAZAAR cover story she wrote that making films is “the most challenging and rewarding thing” she has done. One can only presume, “so far…”
10 The Madonna Revolution
In September 2013, Madonna released her “secretprojectrevolution” at the Gagosian—a 17-minute film she starred in, directed by friend and fashion photographer Steven Klein. The film features Madonna getting thrown in jail for being lewd—she then calls for a revolution and for people to fight for their freedom of expression.

MIA reveals she offered new track 'Sexodus' to Madonna first
Now the NFL is suing her for $1.5m over her middle-finger at the Super Bowl, but she doesn't care about that, either. "It's a massive waste of time, a massive waste of money," she says in a video posted last month on YouTube. "It's ridiculous… a massive display of powerful corporation dick shaking." It's also an example of the hypocrisy of the music business, she says, pointing out that while she is scapegoated for her "display of female empowerment through punk rock", the NFL was happy to have cheerleaders "under 16… hips thrusting in the air, legs wide open… in a very sexually provocative position".
Misogyny and the exploitation of women are a recurrent theme in her music. What does she think about Miley Cyrus and her twerking? "It's a spectacle," is all she'll say. "I'm not talking about anyone else." She has more respect for Madonna's brand of self-exploitation, and tells me a funny story about a song she offered her from the new album, Sexodus. "I actually played that song to Madonna when I wrote it and said, 'Oh, you can have this.' She gave it back to me."
Madonna didn't think it was right for her, but MIA still wanted to know what she thought of the question behind it: when you have it all, what should you do with it? "So I was like, what d'you do? And she said, 'You spend it!' And I said, no, I don't think that's the right answer." Did it change her opinion of Madonna? "No, because Madonna is true to Madonna. She always said she was a material girl."

Madonna’s Free Movie Tops 1.2 Mil Downloads via BitTorrent
BitTorrent has largely been synonymous with piracy in Hollywood, but now the peer-to-peer app company is touting the power of its platform to let content creators distribute intellectual property on their own terms to millions of Internet users.
Vice Media teamed with Madonna to release the Art For Freedom bundle via BitTorrent on Sept. 24. In less than three weeks, the Art for Freedom bundle has been downloaded more than 1.2 million downloads, according to the companies.
The bundle includes the 17-minute film secretprojectrevolution, which Madonna co-directed with Steven Klein, along with special bonus features, including an interview with Vice chief creative officer Eddy Moretti.
Vice, encouraged by the Madonna project, now plans to release an upcoming series of BitTorrent Bundles starting in mid-November featuring original video content that will explore the relationship between open expression and open technology.
BitTorrent has been incredibly transformative for millennial audiences around the world, so this is a really exciting collaboration for us, Vice Media VP of sales Ben Dietz said. BitTorrents distribution platform gives millions instant access to the story
Transformative is one way to put it. Studios, TV networks music labels and other traditional media companies have viewed BitTorrent as a scourge enabling rampant piracy of their content. BitTorrent has countered that its no more a facilitator of piracy than a web browser, and that its application provides access to thousands of legal movies, songs, books and software applications.
The Vice x BitTorrent Bundle series will provide original videos, music, archival content and behind-the-scenes footage directly from artists. Select video features from each BitTorrent Bundle will be featured on Vice.com, its music website Noisey or the Thump electronic dance music channel. The BitTorrent Bundle format is designed to hold multiple file types, with the option of unlocking content if a user provides an email address or pays.
BitTorrent claims to have 170 million monthly active users. The company, founded in 2001, is backed by venture capital firms Accel Partners, DCM and DAG Ventures.
Vice, launched in 1994 as a punk magazine, is a multimedia brand that includes a global network of digital channels, a TV and feature film production studio and other properties. This year the Gotham-based company debuted its Vice news-magazine series on HBO.
In August, Vice sold a $70 million stake to 21st Century Fox, giving Fox a 5% stake in Vice and valuing the company at $1.4 billion.

Madonna Announces Art For Freedom Grants Program
Madonna has announced a grants program in coordination with Art For Freedom, the global digital initiative designed to fuel free speech, to address, respond and protest persecution around the world.
Madonna kicked off Art For Freedom on September 24, 2013 by posting Secretprojectrevolution, a 17-minute video she created with Steven Klein. The film – ‘a call to action’ – originally premiered on Vice and remains downloadable on Bit Torrent. Artists are encouraged to submit their own work on artforfreedom.com in the form of video, music, poetry or photography to express their personal meaning of freedom and revolution.
As part of the Art For Freedom initiative, Madonna has launched a grants program to support individuals and organizations working to advance social justice. Over the course of the next year she will select one artist each month whose creative expression helps fight oppression, intolerance and complacency. Madonna will award $10,000 to a nonprofit organization or project of the winning artist’s choice. All projects must be focused on a social justice issue and exemplify the values of Art For Freedom.
Madonna will select the winning submission each month with the help of a guest curator beginning with Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
“I want to help give a creative voice to those who have been silenced and denied their human rights. Art for Freedom is a platform that gives artists a chance to define freedom through their art. We have already received many incredible submissions. I am inviting all people to express their thoughts on the subject of freedom whether it’s describing specific persecution they have experienced, sharing how their rights have been violated and / or sharing their ideas creatively regarding fighting injustice,” commented Madonna.
Art For Freedom, launched in partnership with Vice, received over 1000 submissions in the first 48 hours of its inception. These submissions and the ones that follow will become part of the Art For Freedom platform and will be eligible for the Arts For Freedom grants program. Contributors can join the project by uploading original artwork at artforfreedom.com or tagging original posts #artforfreedom.
