COSMOPOLITAN LOOKS BACK AT MADONNA 1987 COVER ISSUE

Madonna, who at the time of this cover had her first three albums sold millions—was in the midst of a marriage to Sean Penn.

Her interview with writer Chris Chase (who called her “tough but fascinating”) focuses on her love life, but only as a side note to the career success she’d built for herself, portraying Madonna as the take-charge badass we know her as today.

For example, on her work ethic, she tells Cosmo:

“The musicians yell at me because when they take a meal break, I’m looking at my watch the whole time. ‘Okay, thirty minutes is up, get back in the room.’ I hate taking breaks, people come back lethargic, the energy’s down. I mean, I bring my soy milk and my apple and my rice chips to the studio, and I just want to keep working straight through.”

I mean…that quote is basically the word-equivalent of a power suit.

10 Years Of Madonna's American Life Today!

“This type of modern life is it for me. This type of modern life is it for free”

American Life is the ninth studio album by Madonna.

Released on April 22, 2003 by Maverick Records and distributed by Warner Bros. Records. Produced by Madonna and Mirwais Ahmadzaï featured references to many parts of American culture. The album is considered a concept album, with recurring themes of the American Dream and materialism. These themes reject the reputation Madonna held in the 1980s with her worldwide hit “Material Girl”. American Life is a folk album in its purest definition, instead of a general pop record. The album also contains rock and electronica music, as well as influences of acoustic music on many tracks.

The album peaked at number one in fourteen countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. It was nominated for two Grammys at the 2004 Grammy Awards. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and British Phonographic Industry (BPI) both certified it platinum in recognition of one million shipments in the US, and three hundred thousand shipments in the UK, respectively. It is the second Madonna Album to have a Parental Advisory sticker, after Erotica. Generally critic opinion was mixed with responses noting the “warmer sounds” as well as several critics noting the “innovation” at a time of R&B dominance.

NEWS: MADONNA TO EXHIBIT ICONIC OUTFITS

Madonna will exhibit her most iconic outfits at a pop-up exhibition.

The popstar is loaning out her costumes for an exhibit at Macy’s department store in Los Angeles to boost sales of her Material Girl juniors line. On display for just two hours, costumes will include Madonna’s Jean Paul Gaultier-designed corsets from her 1990 Blonde Ambition concert tour and the beaded white Bob Mackie gown she wore to the 1991 Academy Awards.

“The pop-up exhibit at Macy’s perfectly exemplifies the inspiration and spirit of the Material Girl line and will give my fans a great opportunity to see the evolution of my style over the years,” Madonna told WWD.

The singer reportedly chose the outfits herself for the exhibit, with help from her long-time stylist and costume designer Arianne Phillips, who is overseeing its installation at Macy’s. It’s the first time Madonna has loaned out pieces from her own archives for a public display dedicated solely to her costume history.

Fans can also expect to see the printed neon green stretch skirt Madonna wore in the 1984 Borderline video, and the black satin bustier with gold nipple caps and tassels from the Open Your Heart video.

Perhaps Madonna’s single-most famous look in the exhibit dates back to 1984, when she donned a wedding dress and rolled around the floor of the MTV Video Music Awards to sing Like a Virgin. The entire ensemble will be shown, including a white lace corset, white tulle skirt with dot motif, white tulle veil, white lace fingerless gloves and a silver Boy Toy belt.

“It’s a magical thing to bring all these iconic pieces together in one place,” said Dari Marder, chief marketing officer at Iconix Brand Group, which is Madonna’s partner in Material Girl, selling it into 600 Macy’s doors currently. “This will show customers how influential Madonna has been to fashion and how that influences Material Girl today.”

Madonna’s costume exhibition can be viewed at Macy’s Century City, Los Angeles, from 6pm-8pm this Thursday.

She'll always be a fashion risk taker! Madonna pairs platform wedge boots with bizarre billowing pantaloon trousers

She has worn some iconic outfits in her time, including her infamous Nineties cone bustier.
And even at 54, Madonna continues to push the fashion envelope.
The pop star was spotted wearing unusual sky-high Adidas platform boots and pantaloon trousers as she ran errands in New York City on Monday.

Bold style: Madonna proved she is still a fashion risk-taker with her Adidas platform boots and pantaloon trousers while running errands in New York City on Monday
Madonna opted for an all-black ensemble for her outing, donning pantaloon-style knee-length trousers and a leather jacket over a satin top.
The Ray Of Light singer wore black stockings that, paired with the trousers, was reminiscent of the attire worn by young boys during Victorian times.
But her shoes were the piece de resistance: The black lace-up ankle boots sported white side paneling, as well as the brand's trademark white stripes on the heel.

She's protected: A bodyguard stood guard as Madonna got out of her black SUV
Madonna shielded her eyes with black shades and scraped her blonde hair back into a messy ponytail.
She appeared to be wearing minimal makeup, save for a slick of rose-coloured lipstick.
The star looked to be taking care of some administrative business as she was seen carrying a stack of papers clipped together as well as a Blackberry phone, along with a massive leather bag slung over her shoulder.

Madonna took a trip to Malawi recently, visiting schools supported by her charitable foundation.
But the star, who has adopted two children from the African nation, came under fire from the President of Malawi, who painted her as an arrogant patroniser who now exploits her charity work for personal publicity.
She later retracted the statement, saying her office issued it without her knowledge.

Meanwhile, Madonna was recently announced as the world’s first billionaire female pop star after the most successful year of her three-decade career.
The 54-year-old has earned more than $300million (£200million) in the past 12 months, pushing her net worth above the $1billion (£650million) mark.
A string of concerts that saw her baring her bottom, flashing her breasts and posing with pistols attracted more than two million fans and grossed $305million (£200million), making it the most successful tour by any artist in 2012.

Jean Paul Gaultier Talks Madonna 2 DigitalDaze!!

Talking of bras, before your conical design for Madonna came about, you created one for your very first teddy bear, Nana. Why? Did you ever think it would become such an important piece of fashion and music iconography?
You know, I wanted to have a doll to dress up but my parents didn’t want me to – ‘A doll, non, that’s for a girl, come on!’ – so I made my first transvestite teddy bear instead, ha! I never imagined the design would become what it has though. Nothing I have ever designed has been made as a deliberate fashion statement – I saw fashion advertising for bras in the 50s, and they were on pin-up girls and were a little pointy and sexy, so the conical bra was about my own self-education and interpretation of what women were wearing and liked.

With Women shaping much of your life and career, you’ve had many female muses, most notably Madonna. How did that relationship come about, and how has it evolved over the years?
The first time I saw Madonna was in the ‘Holiday’ video, and I remember thinking she must be British, because Americans couldn’t dress like that. She was and still is very European in reality and her look then was a mix of what I was doing – it was very underground. I loved how she was creating her own look and didn’t need a stylist. I remember seeing her later on in another video clip where she was wearing a black and gold corset, and it was like one of my own designs but it was by Frederick’s of Hollywood, and I thought, ‘Why didn’t she ask me to do that?’ So later on at a party I gave her some sketches of designs I had in mind for her and then one year later, between one of my shows, someone said, ‘Madonna called and she wants you to call her back,’ and I said, ‘Yes, okay, okay,’ thinking they were making fun of me, and then after the show I said, ‘But it was true that story of Madonna, non?’ So we eventually spoke and she knew what she wanted from me and I knew how to create that, and I was also a big fan too, so it was perfect. It still is. It has been one of the most incredible collaborations of my career.

What would a typical night out together involve?
Well, she has a family now of course, but when we used to go out everything was always arranged, usually by her, ha! And we would go for dinner and she never spoke about business, never, never, never – but gossip yes! Bitchy things, yes! And sexy things, yes! The first time I went to New York it was after Thanksgiving, and we went out to some parties and then to a club where she was casting for a show. It was super organised with a mix of work too. I love that about her, that she’s always researching and being influenced wherever she

Madonna Address President Banda's Lies and Stands Firm On Her Beliefs!! Bravo!

"I was very happy to visit with the children of Malawi earlier this month and to see with my own eyes the ten new primary schools in Kasungu province that Raising Malawi and buildOn completed this past year. These schools are now educating more than 4,800 children with girls attending in equal numbers. These children who were formerly learning outside on the ground, in unsafe buildings or not at all, now get to attend classes on a daily basis. My children and I were overjoyed to visit these schools and see what amazing progress has been made. I will continue to follow through on my commitment to help educate the children of Malawi. I’m saddened that Malawi’s President Joyce Band Malawian has chosen to release lies about what we’ve accomplished, my intentions, how I personally conducted myself while visiting Malawi and other untruths. I have no intentions of being distracted by these ridiculous allegations. I came to Malawi seven years ago with honorable intentions. I returned earlier this month to view the new schools we built. I did not ever ask or demand special treatment at the airport or elsewhere during my visit. I will not be distracted or discouraged by other people’s political agendas. I made a promise to the children of Malawi and I am keeping that promise."

Brava!! Such class amidst such turmoil!! We love it.

Seriously, if we didn't have more faith in humanity, we'd say it seems like Madonna was almost begrudged for her willingness to help the nation.
The misunderstanding over the terminology still doesn't change the fact that Madge remained committed on her mission to benefit the children of Malawi. Plans were adapted to better fit the needs and the locale, but sometimes life just throws a wrench in business plans. We move forward with the changes, because that's life!
We support you Madonna! When it comes to helping children, we know your heart is pure!

Thanks PerezHilton

Madonna Auctions Painting To Support Education Projects

Sotheby's is honored to announce that it will auction a painting from Madonna's collection in its Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale on 7 May 2013. Proceeds from the sale of Fernand Leger's Trois femmes a la table rouge, which is estimated at $5/7 million, will benefit the Ray of Light Foundation to support girls' education projects in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries.

In Afghanistan, just 12% of women are literate and it is estimated that only seven girls to every ten boys are able to attend school. In Pakistan, which has one of the largest populations of out-of-school children in the world, it is estimated that there are more than 3 million primary school-aged girls unable to attend school.

'I have a great passion for art and a great passion for education. In conjunction with Sotheby's, I would like to share these two passions. I have chosen to auction this painting called Three Women by Fernand Leger and donate all the proceeds to support girls' educational projects in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries where female education is rare or nonexistent. I cannot accept a world where women or girls are wounded, shot or killed for either going to school or teaching in girls' schools. We don't have time to be complacent. I want to trade something valuable for something invaluable - Educating Girls! Knowledge is power. Let's change the world!' commented Madonna.

The work will be on view at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from April 3rd to April 7th and in London from April 12th to April 16th, before returning to New York for exhibition in Sotheby's York Avenue galleries beginning May 3.

Madonna In Malawi Pics!

Madonna Visits Malawi!

The pop superstar, who has adopted two children from the African nation, flew in to the country on Easter Sunday (31Mar13) and spent the day visiting orphanages in the capital city Lilongwe.

She also plans to visit the 10 schools which have been constructed by the BuildOn organisation in conjunction with her Raising Malawi charity.

The education facilities have now reportedly opened and Madonna will be visiting students there during her trip.

Trevor Nielson, who has been working with Madonna on the charity project, tells Afp, “We are coming to visit the 10 schools that she recently finished building with an organisation called BuildOn. Those schools which are now open and operating are serving 3,800 students.”

The visit comes following criticism of the project by Malawi’s Education Minister Eunice Kazembe, who claimed the singer’s contribution had been exaggerated as the buildings were merely additional classroom blocks rather than whole schools.

Nielson adds, “There’s no controversy, the schools are built to the exact national standards of Malawi, like every other Malawian school. The bottom line is that 3,800 children are going to school now who were not going to school before.”

Madonna previously abandoned plans to build a multi-million dollar academy for girls in the country amid allegations of financial mismanagement at her charity. The project’s collapse led to the dismissal of the foundation’s board of directors.

She has been accompanied on the trip by her two adopted children, David and Mercy.

NEWS: MADONNA & FAMILY IN MALAWI

BLANTYRE, Malawi – Local residents say that U.S. pop diva Madonna has arrived in Malawi for an unannounced visit.

An aviation department worker said Madonna’s jet landed at the Kamuzu International Airport in the country’s capital, Lilongwe, early Monday. It was not clear if she came with her children. The aviation worker spoke on condition of anonymity because he did not have permission to speak to the press.

The singer has previously stayed at the exclusive Kumbali Lodge in Lilongwe, and an employee there says all other guests were checked out. The employee spoke on condition of anonymity because he didn’t have permission to speak to the press on the matter.

Madonna adopted two children from Malawi. She promised the court she would bring her adopted children twice “every two or three years.”
